La tenista estadounidense Serena Williams ganó su título número 23 de Grand Slam en el Australia Open, derrotando a su hermana Venus en 2 sets. Rompió el récord de Steffi Graf mientras jugaba con un Audemars Piguet Millenary de oro rosa en la muñeca. Su logro es notable dada la longevidad de su dominio. En septiembre de 1999 conquistó su primer Grand Slam en Nueva York.
